History of Irish Coffee
Irish Coffee was invented by an Irish chef named Joe Sheridan in the 1940s. He created this beverage to “warm up” chilly travelers who had just arrived in Foynes, Ireland. The story goes that a group of American passengers asked for something to “warm them up” after their flight landed during a particularly cold and wet night. Sheridan rose to the challenge and mixed together Irish whiskey, coffee, brown sugar, and cream. The passengers were so delighted with the drink that they asked what it was called, to which Sheridan responded “That’s Irish Coffee!”
The popularity of Irish Coffee spread throughout Ireland and other parts of Europe in the mid-1940s. In 1952, the head chef of Shannon Airport, Desmond Hackett brought Irish Coffee to America when he served it on Pan American Airways trips from Ireland to the U.S. The drink became so popular that other airlines and restaurants began serving it as well.
By the 1970s, Irish Coffee had become a staple in most bars and restaurants. The recipe has changed over the years, with some people opting to use flavored syrups or alternative liqueurs. However, the classic combination of whiskey, coffee, sugar, and cream continues to remain a favorite.
